Marc-Aurčle Fortin: The Experience of Colour

A retrospective overview with some 100 works spanning four decades (1909 to 1949), this exhibition will highlight Fortin’s contribution as painter, etcher, watercolourist and pastelist. With his compositions of stately elms and the vivid rural scenes that are his signatures, this landscape artist left an indelible imprint on Quebec’s collective imagination. The exhibition is also designed to show a lesser known but nonetheless significant side of his body of work, his cityscapes, which chronicled the irreversible change set in motion by modernity in Montreal in the 1920s and ’30s.

Steeling the Gaze: Portraits by Aboriginal Artists

Combining portrait photographs and video installations, this exhibition explores how contemporary Aboriginal artists have used the portrait as a means of self-expression in spite of the long problematic history of their peoples. They challenge stereotypes, creating a new visual history. Within these images, which describe contemporary existence, references to traditions, family and community appear as a source of strength and grounding. The artists explore contemporary, social and political issues within the Aboriginal communities, and offer a glimpse of Aboriginality we do not often see reflected in our media-saturated society.
