What's on Where in Mississauga

Celebrating Friendship: An Exhibit Commemorating
the 30th Anniversary of the Twinning of Mississauga and Kariya, Japan
To December 21, Bradley Museum
The Museums of Mississauga have an exciting and timely exhibition that opened on July 2nd, entitled Celebrating Friendship: An Exhibit Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Twinning of Mississauga and Kariya, Japan. This exhibit features images and artifacts collected over the last 30 years from the Mississauga Friendship Association and the City of Mississauga. The highlight is several kimonos presented to the City of the Mississauga on the occasion of the opening of the Living Arts Centre in 1997. Presented in partnership with the Mississauga Friendship Association and the Museums of Mississauga, this display runs through until December 21st, 2011 at the Bradley Museum located at 1620 Orr Road. Kariya and Mississauga established a sister city relationship on July 7, 1981. The twinning concept was introduced in the 1950s as a way to develop networks between the cities of the world with the goal of reducing misunderstandings between nations. Friendship is only one of the benefits of sister city relationships. Since the official twinning, both cities have enjoyed a growing exchange of cultural and educational opportunities, and Mississauga now boasts over 80 Japanese companies contributing to our local economy.

You can view this exhibit free of charge in the Anchorage at the Bradley Museum, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. As well, guided tours of Bradley Museum are offered Wednesday to Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. (July & August) or Wednesday and Sunday year round. Tours, which include admission to Benares Historic House are $5.52 for adults; students $3.52; child $2.10 or $13.74 for a family (plus tax). Bradley Museum is located off Southdown Road, south of the QEW at 1620 Orr Road. The Museums of Mississauga are owned and operated by the Culture Division, City of Mississauga.

Eat Drink Man Woman exhibit at the Art Gallery of Mississauga
Exhibit runs from November 10 - December 22

The Eat Drink Man Woman exhibit explores our relationships with food. The title for the exhibition is taken from the 1994 Ang Lee film of the same name about a father, a widower and chef, who has lost his ability to taste and his grown daughters who are desperate for independence. In this film the gorgeous, but sometimes less than tasty food that the father ritually prepares each Sunday becomes a metaphor for the broken lines of communication within the family. In the film, food plays a crucial but supporting role, providing context, symbolism and sensuousness. In the exhibition Eat Drink Man Woman, food is looked at through a wider scope: it is alternatively context, subject, medium and message – sometimes all four.

The artists included in Eat Drink Man Woman engage with issues and ideas about where we eat, what we eat and with whom we eat, all in very different ways. Some of the artists explore the global food industry, while others look at the spaces, places and rituals of food consumption, both private and public. A few use food as their medium to address mythology and politics, while others play with the traditional notion of still life and in doing so give us a new type of beauty. In its many different forms, from painting and video to sculpture and photography, the artwork in this exhibition engages with the changing role of food in contemporary society and in contemporary art.
