Southlake Regional Health Centre is pleased to offer an interactive eight-lecture series
on cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The complimentary series will be of
interest to cancer patients, their family members, community residents, and healthcare
professionals. PRESENTER: Darlene Nicolson is a registered nurse and a certified yoga
meditation teacher, who has facilitated stress reduction classes for several years. During
her lecture, Darlene will talk briefly about Stress Management through Mindfulness. The
audience will then be guided through a few mindful practices, including an eating
meditation, yogic breathing, gentle movement, relaxation, and seated meditation. These
restorative, self nurturing practices are valuable tools that all individuals can use to
reduce stress, increase health and wellness, enhance present moment awareness, and to

Front Garden Recognition Nomination

What is Front Garden Recognition?
Front Garden Recognition is a program designed to beautify Richmond Hill by encouraging
residents to create attractive, colourful and well-maintained front gardens.
How Can my Garden be Nominated?
Between Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, July 5, 2011 you can nominate your own garden or a
neighbour or friend can nominate your garden.
What are the Criteria to Receive a Sign?
All gardens in the are eligible, but you must be nominated to have your garden considered.
Only front and side gardens are eligible.
Gardens must have curb appeal.
Gardens must be well maintained.
Gardens must exhibit a good selection and arrangement of plant material and colour.
Gardens must not contain artificial flowers or holiday decor.
How are the Gardens Being Judged?
The Richmond Hill Garden & Horticultural Society will be sending out teams of
volunteers to look at and judge every garden that is nominated from Friday, July 15
through Tuesday, August 9, 2011.
Each garden will be judged based on the criteria above, and if there is a consensus among
the judges, the garden will receive a sign. If the garden does not meet the criteria, the
judges will leave a letter of recognition. As always, we thank you for your participation
and remind you, that the decisions of the judges are final.
When are the Gardens Being Judged?
Judging will take place from Friday, July 15 through Tuesday, August 9, 2011.
The Richmond Hill Garden & Horticultural Society is a great way to meet people who
also love gardening and to gain valuable knowledge from members who have been gardening
for years. There are 13 monthly meetings, providing opportunities for members to share
helpful information.
Programs include:
- guest speakers;
- flower shows;
- workshops;
- community planning projects;
- planting baskets and barrels around Town;
- Front Garden Recognition;
- Open Gates Garden Tour;
- member garden tours;
- bus trips;
- annual corn roast; and
- much more!
Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 8 p.m. at the McConaghy

York Region Critical Incident Stress Management Team (CISM) is hosting a Masquerade Gala
fundraiser to celebrate 15 years of service to emergency first responders. One of only a
few in Canada, the York Region CISM Team is a multi-disciplinary organization with
volunteer peer members from York Regional Police, York Region Fire Services, Emergency
Medical Services, Hospital Emergency Room Nurses, Chaplains and Mental Health
Professionals. Team members volunteer their time to assist emergency services workers and
their families effectively cope with traumatic events and reduce potential effects of Post
Traumatic Stress. |

Remembrance Day ServiceThe annual Remembrance Day Service is being held at the
Cenotaph (10,100 Yonge Street). The March of Remembrance will form at 10 a.m. at the
northwest corner of Wright and Yonge Streets and will proceed south on Yonge Street at
10:30 a.m. All ex-service personnel are invited to take part in the March and residents
are invited to attend the service.
The Town will be observing a two-minute wave of silence at 11 a.m. Please stop and
reflect in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and
continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.

REMEMBRANCE DAY ROAD CLOSURES
Yonge Street will be closed between Crosby Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive. As well,

from 10 to 11:30 a.m. “No Parking” signs will be posted on Yonge
Street on the day of this event. Barricades will be assigned to the following locations:

on Sunday, November 27. The parade begins at 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Yonge Street
and Industrial Road, and heads south on Yonge Street, concluding at Hillcrest. Residents
of all ages are encouraged to come out and enjoy this favourite holiday tradition! |

Newmarket Santa Claus Parade The frosty air will soon be filled with Christmas
spirit and celebration. Come wave to Santa as he parades through Newmarket on Saturday,
November 20.
The Parade will start at 11:00 a.m. at Eagle
St. and Lorne Ave. The Parade travels east on Eagle St. to Main St., north on Main St. to
Davis Dr. and west on Davis Dr. to Longford Dr. Canada Post will be travelling ahead of
the Parade to pick up letters that the children have written to Santa. Era Banner carriers
will be travelling ahead of the Parade collecting non-perishable food stuffs for the
Newmarket Food Pantry. Kids young and not so young, come out and welcome Santa to
Newmarket! |
